People assume the role of Mike Schmidt, a security guard at a restaurant, where the animatronic creatures come to life at night. The enemies run around the building, and you have to keep track of where they are using the security camera system.
The security system does have a blind spot, and as fate would have it, its the door to the left and right of the room. To look at the hallway, you have to turn on the hallway light, and if one of the animatronic figures appear, hit the door button to close the door. When the fifth night is beat, a completion star is earned, and players unlock a harder night. Beating the sixth night earns a second star and unlocks custom level mode.
The last star is earned if the game is beat with all enemies at the max difficulty. The cameras give you different views to the place, and a number of traps spread out over the park, are fun to navigate through. The cameras can be knocked down during the game, which can be brought back with the reset button. The ventilation thinning can trigger hallucinations and can bring on animatronics that can kill the player. The entire experience is genuinely scary, and the play seems to be more panicky because you just do not know what is coming at you.
You only face a single animatronic, who is nonetheless out to kill you, unlike the first version of the game, where a number of them jump out at you. As compared to the previous editions of the game though, the defense systems are less intuitive, and there are a number of crashes and lags as well. During the entire game, there are a number of bugs and system collapses, that makes the entire experience staggered. Despite that, some scares will really make your jump from your seat!
The art direction is extremely well done. The attention to detail is worthy of applause, with scary toys and dolls in the corner, and just the darkness certainly contributes to the horror. The game crashes several times during the hours it takes the gameplay, and the cameras can be improved.
The 3rd edition of the FNAF series is genuinely terrifying, and the entire environment and premise only add to this intended effect. The animatronic is scary, and the jump scares are truly unexpected.
The game is entertaining, but not recommended for the weak-hearted. On the downside, the game is perhaps weaker than the previous 2 editions, where the players are totally invested in the storyline. Here, there is no connecting story, apart from the legends of the previous games.
